Stéphane La Branche

Climate Sociologist & Scientific coordinator of the International Panel on Behavior Change (IPBC)

Stéphane La Branche is an independent sociologist specialising in transitions and the scientific coordinator of GIECO/IPBC. His research focuses on the barriers and drivers behind changes in practices, perceptions and social representations related to climate and energy, with the aim of identifying effective and context-appropriate responses.

He has served as an invited expert in the development of France’s Energy Transition Law and in the preparation of several versions of the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, and has also contributed to the design of a number of Territorial Climate-Air-Energy Plans (PCAET).

His work in the human and social sciences of energy and climate led to his appointment as an expert reviewer for the IPCC. The results of his research have informed transition policies and strategies — including in mobility, energy, urban planning and public engagement campaigns — for private operators, businesses, public institutions and non-profit organisations, as well as long-term transition scenarios looking ahead to 2050.
