Qigong (Chi Kung) literally means the cultivation (gong) of vital energy (qi, pronounced “chi”). It is one of the pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine, used to help prevent and, in some cases, alleviate a wide range of health conditions. Through its practice, the aim is to harmonise the body, mind, emotions and vital energy.
With the skeleton properly aligned and free from unnecessary tension, practitioners focus on sensing the body, observing the breath, and becoming aware of the mind and emotions. Breathing becomes calm, the gaze turns inward, and the mind remains conscious, present and detached.
